Reviews and listings

For many guests the first contact with a restaurant is a listing: Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor or a delivery app. Wrong hours, an old menu or an unanswered one-star review cost tables before anyone walks in. The tools here help you keep listings correct and answer reviews in time.

Start with the free owner tools from each platform. Google Business Profile, Yelp for Business and Tripadvisor's owner pages let you update hours and menus, add photos and reply to reviews at no cost. For a single restaurant, checking these each week covers most of the work.

Review management platforms such as Birdeye, Podium and ReviewTrackers gather reviews from many sites into one inbox, alert you to new ones and offer AI-drafted replies. They make the most sense with several locations or a lot of review volume.

Use AI drafts as a starting point. A reply that names the dish, the visit and what you are changing reads very differently from a template, and other diners read the replies. Keep negative-review replies short and specific, and move details to a private message.

ReviewTrackers

Watch each platform's review rules. Yelp does not allow asking customers for reviews, and Google and the FTC prohibit fake or paid reviews. Review request features in these tools should be set up within those rules.

Keep your menu and hours consistent everywhere. When the hours on Google, Yelp, Tripadvisor, your website and the delivery apps disagree, guests show up to a locked door, and the review that follows is fair. Holiday hours are the usual trap. Some tools here push one set of hours and menus out to many platforms at once, which helps once you run more than one location.

Guests look at photos before they decide. Owners can add recent, well-lit photos of real dishes to their Google and Yelp pages; keep them current when the menu changes.

Reviews are also free research. Read them in bulk once a month and note what keeps coming up: slow weekend brunch, a dish everyone praises, parking confusion. Review platforms that group comments by topic make this quicker, but a spreadsheet and an hour work too. Fix the repeated complaints first, then reply to the reviews that raised them, saying what changed. Share the praise with the team as well, by name where a review mentions a server.

Questions about reviews and listings

Should I reply to every review?

Reply to all negative reviews and as many positive ones as you can. Short, specific replies show future guests the restaurant is listening. A review platform helps once volume makes it hard to keep up by hand.

Can I ask guests for reviews?

On Google, yes, as long as you don't offer anything in return or filter for happy guests. Yelp asks businesses not to request reviews at all. Set any review request tool up to follow each platform's rules.

Is it safe to use AI to write review replies?

As a draft, yes. Edit every reply so it mentions the actual visit and sounds like your restaurant. Copy-paste replies are easy to spot and can make a complaint look ignored.

Do I need a paid tool to manage listings?

Not for one location. Google Business Profile, Yelp for Business and Tripadvisor's owner tools are free. Paid platforms help when you run several locations or want one inbox for every review site.
